What To Do In Rocky Point

Rocky Point, or Puerto Penasco, is a vacation paradise located in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is close to the Arizona border and has an almost endless variety of fun activities available. Rocky Point is a lot less crowded and less expensive than other resort destinations, which makes it an excellent choice for your next vacation.

The amount of activities to experience in Rocky Point is endless, but here are just a few that might pique your interest. If you’ve traveled along way from home to a resort in Rocky Point, you will love relaxing on a sunset cruise. Several local charter boat excursions are available, and they will wine and dine you on a relaxing cruise through the Sea of Cortez. You can choose from large motor yachts to one of the two pirate sailing ships that venture to sea daily. Live entertainment, fireworks, dancing, swimming in the ocean and even horseback riding are all great ways to introduce yourself to Rocky Point.

How about a morning round of golf at the new world-class golf course? This challenging course at the Mayan Peninsula Golf Course will delight any golfer. After a full or half game, you can relax on the beach and soak up some sun. In the afternoon you can rent a kayak and tour the nearby estuaries, or frolic with the dolphins which are known for swimming right up to friendly boats. One of the most popular activities in Rocky Point is snorkeling under the clear blue waters and exploring the marine life. You can also watch the Sonoran desert change colors at sunset and plan a romantic rendezvous.

If you are a sailor you can rent a sailboat and venture out to Bird Island, where you can visit the local sea lion colony. Take your snorkeling gear along for the trip and encounter the various exotic sea creatures on an underwater journey. You might even get to see a California gray whale or a massive whale shark. Visiting Rocky Point's massive open air seafood market is a must, and you can enjoy delicious, authentic Mexican food right on the shore.

Eco–adventures sponsored by CEDO
Join the flow of activities at CEDO by participating in these natural history explorations of the desert and the sea designed especially for you and your family. All activities start at the CEDO Marine Science Center at the CEDO facility in Las Conchas. For more information about CEDO and/or their eco-activities, check out their very nicely done web site at www.cedointercultural.org.

Las Conchas Home Tour
Each year CEDO docents organize a spectacular tour of beautiful Las Conchas homes. Join us on Saturday, March 5th, 2005 for this annual fun event! Tickets are only $15 each and are available at the Las Conchas gate and the CEDO visitors center (the Earthship).

Annual Fall Fiesta
The annual CEDO fundraiser has become a local institution. It is arguably the best party of the year, complete with live music, dancing, silent (and not so silent) auctions, drinks, good food, and visiting with neighbors and the kind of really interesting people that Puerto Peñasco has become noted for. Join us again on TBD when we party down and support CEDO activities in the process! The theme of this years fiesta is "Planting the Seeds of the Future!"

JJ's Cantina
JJ's is your quintessential beach bar located in/on Cholla Bay. Soon to be a historic landmark, maybe sometime in the next century or two, it offers muchas cervezas along with the usual bar drinks and house specialties like cherry bombs and sex on the beach (those are drinks, not events) and pretty darn good tostadas (my favorite) made by the lovely Glenda. John and Joseph, the owners, also sponsor the Santa Claus Club, a Christmas event that benefits local children's charities, and some of the more outrageous and fun events to be found anywhere! Check their web site for the latest event dates and updates at http://www.jjscantina.com. A few highlights on the current calendar include:
  • Hobie Cat Sailboat Races
  • Bathtub Races
  • Over the Line (OTL) Softball
  • Angler of the Year Contest

Fishing Derby
Sponsored annually by the Cholla Bay Sportsmens Club, this event (really a series of events) culminates with a fish fry and awards party in late October at the CBSC Fry Shack in Cholla Bay. The Fish Fry is lots of fun and a great feed! Check the Rocky Point Times for a listing of upcoming events.
